Health & Democracy Houston Initiative
A key aspect of civic participation is voting. Data out of Houston reveals alarming statistics and opportunities to strengthen civic participation:
Only 17% of eligible voters cast a ballot in the 2023 mayoral election.
Houston’s health sector is a major force and represents over 300,000 employees — about 10% of the city’s workforce.
The Health & Democracy Houston (H&D Houston) initiative aims to counter this alarming trend by partnering with trusted health leaders and organizations with deep local ties to co-create and promote nonpartisan civic and voter participation. Why? Because we recognize that higher civic participation leads to better individual and community health outcomes. Strengthening participation among health professionals gives us the opportunity to make a lasting impact, both for the workforce and for the communities served.
